A Handmade Scrapbook Easily Created to Commemorate Special Events and Give as Gifts
You went to a special event or party and took a lot of photos but what are you going to do with them now? If you are like most people, you'll view the photos on your computer or from the envelope that they came in and that will be the end of it. They will be filed away never to be seen again.
That is a shame. I know, because I have boxes and boxes of pictures that are rarely seen because it's too difficult to get at them. Conversely, I also have several scrapbooks that are just a joy to look at. To me, they are heirlooms that I can't even put a price on.
The idea of putting my photos into a handmade scrapbook came to me after I attended a certain event and several people asked me for copies of my pictures. I didn't want to just hand these people a packet a random pictures because this event deserved special treatment. It was special and so I wanted to showcase the pictures in a special way. It wasn't enough to just give them pictures. I wanted to have words with the pictures.
Although handmade scrapbooks take a lot of time to make, they can not be beaten for quality and uniqueness. I started with that first special event and have made several books since then including the two shown below. Follow the steps below to Make Your Own:
To Make a Handmade Scrapbook:
Mount prints on 8-1/2 x 11 white card stock. In addition to the prints and card stock, I recommend getting a paper cutter and a corner rounder. The paper cutter allows you to precisely cut your photos and card stock to size, and the corner rounder is really nice for shaping the corners of your photographs.
I usually put my prints in chronological order first, crop them to size, round the corners (personal preference) and then mount them with glue sticks.
In addition to the photo pages, adding a one page family tree or an itinerary page can really help tell the story. My scrapbooks usually end up being 20-40 pages with 3 to 5 pictures on each page.
Put words to the pictures. After all the pictures are mounted onto the card stock scrapbook pages, I bring them to my computer and simply go through each page and type into a blank Word document the captions for each picture.
When I began making these books, I purchased a disk of really cool fonts called "The Best of Creative Lettering" from my favorite scrapbook magazine, "Creating Keepsakes Magazine." If you want a great scrapbooking resource, this magazine is it!
After the captions are in the Word document, I print them, and mount each one by the appropriate picture using glue sticks.
Embellish the pages. Now that the pictures and captions are mounted, I dress up the pages with memorabilia, such as, golf score cards and ticket stubs, and I add stickers to limit the amount of white space. Don't use metallic stickers as they do not copy well.
Copy, laminate and coil. The cheapest way to make copies of your original pages is to go to a copy place, like Kinkos or Reprographics, and make the color copies yourself (bring your own cardstock). It's more expensive, but they will do it for you if you prefer.
This is one of the main reasons that I make these books. You can make as many copies as you like of the original and everybody gets a copy of their own to take home. You can't do that with scrapbooks made in those big, fancy albums.
To make the scrapbooks more durable, I laminate the front and back covers. The books will hold up longer and look nicer. Lastly, the books need to be bound. I like to use the black coil type because they hold up well and look really nice.
I spend a lot of time and energy creating these handmade scrapbooks. When I give someone one of these special gifts and see their expression, it truly warms my heart and makes it all worthwhile.

Questions & Answers about Cut Scrapbook Page
Pregnancy Scrapbook?
I want to start a pregnancy scrapbook. I am already 5 months and I really wish I would have thought about it when I first found out, but oh well. I would like any cute ideas on what to include. I am not much for writing I would more like ideas of things to put in it. I have lots of ultrasound pictures to include, but what else? Also I want to do a page for each week and I want to start at week 6 and put some sort of cut out that is the actual size of the baby. For example week 18 he was 6.5 inches, 8 oz. I wish I was artistic and I would just draw the outline of a baby each week that is the approx. size, but I am not. Any ideas on how to do this?
I made a scrapbook for my daughter during her pregnancy. here are a few of the page ideas that I used in it. with her ultrasound pictures I used two pages, down the side of the left page I stenciled the word "ANTICIPATION" on that page I included two ultrasound pics.and out beside each I journaled (wrote) in the date, how old, where you had the test,etc..you can use colored cardstock, reg.paper, you might type it, write it, etc.I done hers in bl/white paper and it looked really good.On the adjacent page I put three more ultra sound pics. and done the same as above.Out bside the pics.. I journaled how she was feeling from pic to pic, how much weight gained, etc.I also done this in bl/white.
Another was of the nursery...when you found out, how the significant other acted. one of the house you live in, tell alittle about it...how long there, memories of your childhood.another that was really cute was at 6 or 7 mo.She posed for me, holding up her little (big) pouch, I took one of her lying on the sofa, on this page I stenciled the word SWELLING on in big letters and put these on cut cardstock, like a picture frame, and glued these on the page diagonal.I made the whole book and I wish I could show it to you but...make sure you keep up with dr. visits, how much weight you gain each time, Don't forget Dad during this time nor the Grandparents. The Baby shower, (especially the day you find out what the little angel is)the day of delivery, friends who were there for you..journal thoughts you have during your entire pregnancy and jot them down, you can always scrap it later. He will cherish it always. you can get lots of ideas out of books from you local grocery store. good luck and I know it will be beautiful!
I am making a family cookbook....?
...What is the best paper to use. For cost, my ink jet printer will have to do.
I would like to buy 11 x 8.5 already cut to 5.5 x 8.5. Where can I purchase it. I know ink jet printing will run if gotten wet but I'm not making enough of them to send it out to publish and laser printers are too expensive to buy for this small project. What is the best weight paper to use considering my printing options. In my vast collection of cookbooks I see all weights but they are all professionally published and not with an ink jet printer. I just want to document the family recipes and add pictures, more like a scrapbook and about 85 to 100 pages. Maybe a semi glossy light weight paper?
Any ideas for my project?
Thanks,
Rayleen
so why not just make it full size landscape page, and fold in half?
and you would be able to print on both sides of the page.
you will use fewer pages if you do it that way.
semigloss will be quite thick, so then you would have to cut it.
inkjet not terrible, but the ink will eventually dry out.
you might want to laminate the cover.
There are a lot of variables, but the binding will be key-the spiral lay flats are good, they are about $2 in kinkos.
or use a hole punch and some nice yarn and stitch together.
best of luck with it!
