What are the Different Kinds of Paper?
Paper products are everywhere. In fact, they are highly commercially available that it's never difficult to buy one for your needs. If you are using paper primarily for making greeting cards, the two most common sizes for the purpose are A4 (210mm x 297mm) and A5 (148mm x 210mm). Although most paper products are sized at 216mm x 279mm, you can now actually purchase pre-cut paper for cardmaking.
The most common types of paper products are bond, text, tag, cover and index. But the ones widely used for cards are text and cover, also called card stock as they are heavier and fitter for cardmaking. Nevertheless, consider all the different kinds of paper for making greeting cards and other activities.
Parchment is initially writing and painting material made from animal skins. Today, it is widely used for various crafts and arts. It is characterized by a mottled finish and a translucent surface like that of a real parchment. Sulphite pulp is now used to make fine parchment.
Construction paper is commonly used in grade school. It has a mild texture, muted hues and is priced relatively cheaply. This paper is perfect for practice arts and for window inserts. It is great for paper folding activities, as well.
Vellum is originally created from animal skins like lambskin, calfskin and kidskin. Today, it is a type of specialty paper characterized by a hard, non-porous and translucent surface. It comes in a good range of shades and textures.
Mulberry paper is made from the fiber or pulp of the mulberry. It is a pure, translucent paper that is lightweight yet strong. It is commonly used for repair and lamination of paintings.
Corrugated paper is usually used to add depth and texture to paper artworks. Although more expensive than common card stock, it is an embellishment in itself.
Handmade paper is generally strong and heavy for use as card base. It is available in different soft pastel colors, and often with noticeable embedded fibers, leaves and flowers that add to its look and feel.
